Hanley Road floods frequently when the River Severn is in spate. Please click here for flooding information regarding this location. Hanley Road in Upton is susceptible to flooding during periods of high water levels in the River Severn. To address this concern and ensure public safety, a strategically positioned Farson streaming webcam is employed for real-time monitoring of water levels and road conditions in the area. This proactive approach allows for timely response and appropriate measures to be taken.Upton, situated on the banks of the River Severn, has a reputation for experiencing regular flooding. In 2000, low-lying areas of Upton were severely affected by flooding, and the situation escalated during the 2007 floods, surpassing the levels observed in 2000. Consequently, the town became inaccessible by road.The primary developed area of the town is situated on slightly elevated ground compared to the surrounding countryside. In the past, during severe flood events, Upton would become an island. However, to mitigate this issue, a connecting causeway now carries the A4104 above the flood-prone areas to the west, along with a viaduct on the eastern side of the bridge. These infrastructure improvements have facilitated better access and reduced the impact of flooding on the town.Upton upon Severn has a historical significance as it used to serve as a port and was the sole river crossing for many miles in the region. In the bygone era before modern transportation, the town bustled with river craft, transporting goods to and from the prosperous agricultural areas in its vicinity. Today, pleasure craft dominate the river, and the town's thriving marina on the east bank is a testament to its maritime heritage. Upton's rich history is reflected in the diverse array of charming old buildings that grace its streets, serving as a reminder of its past prosperity.
