Many thanks to Finavon Castle Fishings for facilitating this camera's location and capitally funding its installation. The The headstreams of the river originate from the slopes of Broad Cairn and Cairn Bannoch, including the small corrie lochan known as Loch Esk. As it progresses in its upper course, it converges with the White Water at Braedownie, which flows through Glen Doll. Continuing its southeastern trajectory, the river traverses Glen Clova and near the mouth of the glen, it merges with the Prosen Water.Emerging from the Braes of Angus and entering the expansive Strathmore valley, the South Esk meanders in an easterly direction, passing by Brechin before reaching Montrose Basin. Through this basin, it proceeds outward to the North Sea, navigating a narrow channel that lies between Montrose and Ferryden.During the summer months, the South Esk stands out as one of Scotland's finest rivers for sea trout fishing. Under favorable weather conditions, the river exhibits good salmon runs in the spring and excellent ones in the autumn. Spanning a length of approximately forty-nine miles (79km), the river offers exceptional angling opportunities from Glen Clova all the way down to Montrose Basin, where it ultimately merges with the sea.
